Student Comments about the Class or Instructor

Dr. Dion, This was a well organized class. The readings and paper topics were interesting and informative. I learned a lot about an area with which I wasn''t very familiar. Thanks, Sanaz

I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Dion did an excellent job of explaining the material and provided a reasonable amount of required reading for each class period. I was quite surprised when she gave us an anonymous survey about the class and actually implemented the ideas provided by the students. This was the first time in my four and a half years a GA Tech that a professor took the time to ask what was wrong with the class and sought to correct the issues students had. My only complaint is that I had not taken classes from her previously.

I enjoyed Dr. Dion''s enthusiasum about her subject. It was infectious and made me want to learn more about Latin America. I felt that she was able to relate very well to our class not only as an instructor but also as a peer.

A great class! The readings were of reasonable length and often interesting (except perhaps Sanchez''s discusive musings). But, I HATE dividing up into groups. We did not do it often, yet I found the few experiences unfulfilling and not worthwhile.

I really enjoyed the class. Dr. Dion is a very enthusiastic teacher and really knows her stuff. Plus she was always willing to do whatever it took to get us to understand the material. I didn''t like how we had to talk in class so much but I liked that there were different ways to participate, not just in class.

This was one of the most effectively taught and interesting classes I have taken at Tech. Great job!!

Dr. Dion is an excellent professor. She kept the Latin American Politics class interesting and did ask for an evaluation of the class when she thought we were losing interest. I am pleased to have taken this class and am better informed of Latin America.

Overall I feel I gained a broad understanding about Latin American politics and the general trends within Latin America, particularly in modern times. I feel, however, that a lot is missed by not focusing a bit more on the cultural factors within each country. Also, I know the focus was mainly on overall terms and concepts, but I feel that teaching a course in Latin American politics should require a knowledge about particular people that shaped the course of those politics. It is a complex topic, I know, and it is a lot to tackle over one semester. I think one of the things we read that sticks out in my mind the most is the testimonials of the people tortured in Argentina. I felt that made the situation more real in our minds than merely reading about numbers and causes for why it happened. Overall, I''m very glad I took the course and feel I''ve learned a lot of new concepts.

Felt that too many countries were covered for the amount of time and the amount of information discussed. Overall, liked the class and how it was taught. Think more discussions on webct would help in understanding.

prof. dion: you did an excellent job, i really enjoyed your class, i especially liked how you outlined the chapter to help put things in perspective for the students. plus the timelines and class discussions were really advantagous. the news reports were awesome because it gave the class a chance to 1-learn more current events and 2-be able to see and sort of get to know each person in the class. since college classes aren''t as friendship-forming as they were in high school it really gave a personal feel to the class, which i liked alot. on a personal note, you were very cool and very understanding, of which i am very thankful and apprciate very much. you made every effort to make the class comfortable and to make sure we understood the material, which is something that not many professors that i have seen do. i will def. sign up for another one of your classes. thanks for making my latin american politcs learning experience something i won''t soon forget. -- jennifer layer
